Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge each other. He had access into some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
