Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
