Omaha Hi-Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems complex initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha High-Low.
