Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease.
