Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
