Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played many hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
