Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi-low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of wagering choices and because you have several individuals battling for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha Hi-Lo.
