Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.

The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
